Residing in the Arizona desert with its intense light and the contrasts of the environment, informs Myra Lawson's work. The spirit of the dry, desert landscapes inspires her visual journeys with light, color and texture. She credits her earliest inspiration in the arts to her grandmother, who was an accomplished artist and painter. Later on, travel, exposure to historical artists, galleries, museums and churches in France fueled her desire to work with the medium of glass in an intuitive and innovative ways. Inheriting her kiln, Myra moved to the southwest in her early 20s, and wilderness of Arizona captured her imagination. Classes at Pilchuck and with local stained glass artists, fueled her desire to work in glass. A successful stained glass career followed. |
Her work in stained glass and fused glass in Lake Havasu, for over 20 years, led her to teaching the art in classes at the Mohave Community College. As artist and teacher, she encourages students to look closer and enjoy the beauty of themselves and their environment. Beauty uplifts and inspires. Myra feels that art, like breathing is not separate from the natural world. One must not just look, but see. The spirit of the desert Southwest comes alive through Myra K. Lawson's pieces in a unique blend of bold and pastel desert colors. She considers herself a semi-abstract artist, multi-media artist drawing inspiration from the spirit of the natural world and invites all to explore, observe and imagine.
